An ancient proverb says "show me your garden and I will tell you who you are". And we at La Darbia, we took these words to the letter, creating a garden that cannot be more genuine.

When I meet Giuliano in the garden in the morning, intent on treating tomatoes, planting basil or pulling weeds, my day is already reassuring: it's just the little every day things, the contact with nature and the wonderful scents that propagate the true secret of happiness from the flowerbeds.

For us Italians, the garden is an ancient and almost sacred tradition: working the land with dedication, cultivating genuine products for our loved ones, exploiting the wisdom of grandparents is the result of an honest, frugal and healthy mentality. For many, even today, the idea of buying vegetables at the supermarket is unacceptable: even if the rhythms of modern life require changes, the "biological" culture has always been in our DNA ... maybe even before we knew it!

On the other hand, what's better than walking through rows of vegetables arranged in order and brightened by some joyful flower?

There are aubergines with an intense color and shiny skin, parsley growing in bunches, brightly colored peppers, onions so precious in the kitchen. But it is the scent of celery that always welcomes me as I enter the restaurant gate, an intense and unmistakable aroma that brings me back to my childhood. From the flowerbed of the aromatic herbs, enveloping odors spread: rosemary, sage, thyme, marjoram, tarragon, chives and mint seedlings are my joy and, of course, also that of the chef who exploits these delicacies at Km 0.

When evening falls, I love sitting down to sip a glass of brut rosé (the one produced by La Darbia, of course) under the pergola covered with a variety of climbing courgettes, which grow cheerfully with a very nice shape that brings to mind children's somersaults. And when I close my eyes, I hear the soft roar of the water that flows cheerful and clear from the fountain.

On the other hand, the mild climate of lake Orta certainly helps the production of vegetables: the sun matures tomatoes of every variety, the rain waters the leeks and cabbages, the evening breeze makes lettuce leaves sway.

I must confess that I, myself, do not have "green fingers". I just love being in the vegetable garden every season, in the open air watching the shoots and the seedlings that give fresh fruits every day.

Cicero, the famous Latin author, claimed that "if you have a vegetable garden next to the library, nothing will be missed". So the combination of garden and culture was already evident in ancient Rome. We need to approach healthy nutrition, we always need "food for the body" and "food for the mind".

The bucolic tradition gives us the love for the countryside, teaches us that the agricultural efforts are always repaid by a sense of great satisfaction. It is no coincidence that people like Michelle Obama have relaunched this tradition, which teaches how to take care of plants, but also approaches a more correct food culture and introduces a lifestyle that reconciles us with nature.
